I have been in my neighborhood just running down the streets for exercise (I have a house attached to Griffith Park) and grabbing supplies for my kids, who live with their mom. I’ve been going in the morning and dropping them off and listening to them play music from outside the house to be safe. I haven’t been in full quarantine yet, and I will start tomorrow as I’m waiting for my test results back. I don’t have symptoms, but I am just playing it safe for the people around me.
How has the spread of COVID-19 impacted your ability to work?
COVID-19 has canceled or postponed all my tour dates for the next 6+ weeks, which sucks pretty bad. I love what I do and I hope that musicians everywhere can get back to traveling and performing live soon. I’m sure the energy at live shows once they resume is going to be incredible.
Why did you want to start doing Instagram Live sets?
I started to get the idea together on Friday when all the news started coming in: The NBA, Tom Hanks, and the presidential announcement that was very very odd and didn’t seem like we had an end in sight. Mostly I was thinking it would give people a reason to stay home and be entertained. I took a night off yesterday, but I’m starting again tonight. We use IG Live for the first hour and then the afterparty moves to YouTube.
What can we expect from future IG Live sets?
I’m trying to get some themes going. Friday’s was like the sabbath, so I had ambient music and live feeling with Rhye. Saturday was a rave at night, but deep house and melodic music, and Sunday afternoon was dancehall and reggae with the Major Lazer crew, who are also stuck in L.A. The rest of the week I need to get creative, because I don’t think it’s safe to invite people over to my house anymore to collaborate, but I am doing a lot of improvised live ideas so that you can tune in and hear brand-new music or something that only exists in that live stream and will be gone in 24 hours.
People need to know: What are you wearing these days? Has your outlook on getting dressed changed since you’re not really going out?
Fashionwise, I love wearing my stuff so I can be looking good for the people on the IG sets. But definitely cozy. We made original clothes for each set so far, like the Corona Sabbath hoodies with Secular Sabbath. It gives us something to do.
