As more and more cities and countries around the world go into lockdown during the coronavirus crisis, more and more people are pining for human connection. In Italy, citizens have brightened their mandated quarantines with happy, hopeful group singalongs from their balconies. Elsewhere, many have taken to their laptops and iPhones for virtual meet-ups, group cocktail hours, and meditation circles. People are desperate to find a sense—any sense—of community at a time when social interaction and physical connections are actually spreading the pandemic.

In the fashion community, many designers and founders of independent labels are feeling the angst of social distancing too. Like all of us, they feel sad, frightened, and stuck, but still motivated to make change. Many have taken to their Instagrams to speak out about the effects of the virus and the uphill battle that we all still have in the fight against it. Their storefronts are closing and their businesses are more than likely declining, but many, including Cate Holstein, Simon Porte-Jacquemus, and Brandon Maxwell are staying positive via social media. Brands like Khaite and Little Liffner are donating to causes like Baby2Baby and the Red Cross in Italy, the former of which provides essential household items and food to families and children in need. Maxwell and the New York label Alex Mill, meanwhile, are connecting with their fans and followers with uplifting notes of encouragement and optimism. They are offering lines of connection, as if to say, I’m here, I hear you, and we will get through this together.

As we search for glimmers of hope during this difficult time, here are 13 Instagram messages from fashion designers that encourage us to give back, stay motivated, and connect with one another, no matter the distance apart.
